How to unfollow many Instagram accounts without getting blocked
Following 1,500 accounts and seeing posts from people you no longer know? A cleanup feels good, but doing it badly can earn you an “action blocked” message, or worse, a hacked account. Here’s a safe method in three steps: know, sort, then unfollow calmly.
Avoid “mass unfollow” apps
Apps that unfollow hundreds of accounts for you need your password or run bots on your account. Instagram watches for this automated activity and can temporarily block actions, or restrict the account. And giving your password to an unknown service is one of the main causes of hacked accounts. More in are unfollower apps safe?
Step 1: get the facts
Request your Instagram export with Followers and following, and also Messages, Likes and Comments if you want to know who you interact with (guide: download your data). Drop it into FollowersChecker: you instantly see who doesn’t follow you back, since when you follow each account, and who you really talk to.
Step 2: sort with the cleanup assistant
In the Relationships tab, the cleanup assistant shows the accounts that don’t follow you back one card at a time. For each one, you see:
- whether they follow you back, and since when you follow them;
- your interactions with them (messages, likes, comments);
- a hint: “Safe to unfollow” when you never interact, “think twice” when you do.
Swipe or tap Keep or Unfollow. Your choices are saved in your browser, so you can stop and continue later. At the end, you get your list of accounts to unfollow, each with a link to the profile.
Step 3: unfollow at a calm pace
Instagram doesn’t publish its exact limits, and they vary by account. To stay safe:
- Work in small batches and spread the cleanup over several days.
- Take breaks between batches instead of unfollowing non-stop.
- Stop at the first warning. If Instagram says it restricts certain activity, wait a day or two before continuing.
- New accounts are watched more closely: go even slower.
Sort your following in minutes, then clean up without risk.

Frequently asked questions
How many accounts can I unfollow per day?
Instagram doesn’t publish a number, and it changes with the age and activity of the account. Go slowly, in small batches, and stop as soon as you see a warning.
Are people notified when I unfollow them?
No. Instagram doesn’t send a notification when you unfollow someone.
Can I undo an unfollow?
Yes, by following again. For a private account, you’ll have to send a new request.
Do I need to give my password to FollowersChecker?
Never. The site only reads the export file you download from Instagram, on your device.
